Why is Chrysler struggling with the release of the Integrated Trailer brak controller for those 2010 Ram pickups that did not have the option factory installed. My truck for example has the two grey connectors yet my dealer will not sell me the controller or flash my truck. The kit was promissed in mid november. But when I checked this week it is still not available.

I for one, would like to see more low end, although the 5.7 was a HUGE step up from the 5.2/5.9 in high end HP, the torque numbers were pretty close, and the Hemi makes most of it’s awesome power in the mid/high rpm range.

6:43We’re getting some great questions tonight.
Naturally, we want to keep our future plans close to the chest. So, we’re not going to be able to offer any insight as it relates to questions about small displacement diesels, SRT-10 Rams, 6.4-liter HEMIs, direct injection and 8-speed transmissions.
However, we’re making careful note of your interest in these technologies. Certainly, your feedback tonight will help us understand what’s important to you.

Ford and GMC’s 2011 trucks have higher capablities overall compared to Ram’s Hemi and in particaulr, the Cummins. Towing, payload and front-end capablities (e.g. for snow plows) are higher in most Ford and GMC models compared to Ram models. For some, these capablities do not make much of a difference since Ram’s capablities are good enough for the average pick-up driver. However, if you need to tow a 5th wheel of 21k lbs, for example, the Ram is not really a contender. Could you comment on the capabilites the future Rams may have?

Speaking of MDS, once suggestion that I have is that you make MDS feature selectable within the info center. To satisfy EPA, enable it by default but allow owners to turn it off. MDS may keep people from buying because if you put on aftermarket muffler, engine sounds horrible when MDS active.

6:50For 2012MY all manufactures have adopted the Society of Automotive Engineers standards for trailer tow requirements. Up until this point, all manufacturers were able to rate their trucks based on whatever metric they chose. As a consequence, comparison ratings between manufacturers could not lead the customer to a direct comparison between manufacturers. The SAE standard has minimum requirements for performance on selected grades (hills). Most of our products would rate significantly higher if sold by other manufacturers. Unfortunately we are now starting to test our products to the new standards so ratings will be different for upcoming models.

DI…nothing wrong with squeezing a bit more power out. The reason I bought the 2009 RAM is it was the only thing that provided about the same performance as my Tundra. I do miss the 6-spd auto in the Tundra as it was a better combination than the 5-spd in the mopar. I figure with DI you could get a bit more power and still maintain reasonable gas mileage.

I want to install a kit that allows me to run E100, pure ethanol on my HEMI, the system involves installing an electronic item on the fuel injectors so that duration is increased and the engine will not give out P codes. Right around most shift point, low to moderate gas, city driving. You just feel vibration in steering wheel, seat, kind of everywhere. Kind of feels like driving in 3rd gear in a manual when you should be in 2nd gear – just vibrates. Dealer felt it immeidately and Dodge Tech claims MDS – no fix. IF you drive super aggressively and fast, blasting thru and past all these shift points you dont feel it. Did not try ERS but service did, said no change. Will try Tow Haul and see if better. But not quite the solution I need ;^)

6:55Mike Ford, the HD truck is just that… pretty heavy duty. The mods that you’ve made shouldn”t really change the FE. The only items are probably the obvious… the engine was calibrated for Mid Grade, so you may be able to gain a little bit of spark advance by ensuring good fuel. The others are probably apple pie type items like ensure that the tires are up to pressure, try to coast as much as possible to avoid sending energy to the brakes. You may be able to get some benefit from a lower rolling resistance tire as well, but I’m not sure what to recommend. Gregg

Relaying a forum question that someone wanted to be asked tonight on this chat: “””…. why is it that before the Hemi reaches op’ temp I can cruise uphill at 30 -50km/h (ambient air temp 10 degrees celcius or colder), with the MDS coming in, and yet cruising at 90 km/h on a flat road with no headwind and once in MDS will jump back out if I happen to so much as twitch my foot (ambient temp could be 30 or minus 30 doesn’t seem to make much difference). I know there is a software update for those who complain that the MDS engage/disengage is too noticable for their liking (Pussy’s), I actually prefer some “Feel” and the 4 cylinder rumble lets me know that it’s engaged, and I can even tell now when it’s about to come in, it almost sounds like it’s 1/2 in or running on 6 cylinders. “””

7:03Pasquale, I knew that they were different on the 4.7L, but didn’t think that they were different on the HEMI. The plugs can be replaced with precious metal plugs as long as they are the same geometry and heat range. The plug won’t offer significantly imprioved FE though. There may be a slight improvement due to the lower wire mass of the PM plug. It helps with the flame initiation because there is lower heat transfer to the plug wire. Gregg

7:04harold – most likely the shake you are feeling in 4WD is shudder in the front halfshafts. The higher ride height on your truck increases the driveline angles beyond their range and result in the shudder. The mods should not cause a durability issue with the halfshafts, but shudder will be there in 4WD. Check the aftermarket folks for a set of replacement halfshafts that are “shudderless”; specifically made for use with lift kits. – Mike

You asked >>>>Can you describe the “driveline vibration” and when it when it occurs?>>>> ANSWER: Right around most shift point, low to moderate gas, city driving. But not quite the solution I need ;^)

ok about the ethanol but which parts need the lubrication, is it the fuel pump? I don’t think there is an issue with the lubricity when it comes to the engine and it’s components, is there? Also I was told that all cars today have ethanol resitsant seals (since the early 90’s at least) so I don’t think the solvant part is a issue is it?
Wednesday December 8, 2010 7:25 Pasquale
7:25HemiHead, Not sure what you mean “solved”. The engine was not designed to use E100 and premature engine wear will result. Also the calibration cannot recognize the use of this fuel so that the engine will run lean with probable damage. Eric

Allow me to clarify my comment about not loving the HEMI but only liking it. I DO NOT like the gear ratios of the 545RFE behind the HEMI. With better gearing; lower first, second, and third gears, the HEMI would be better able to reach it’s full potential. Right now it lacks because of the high-r.p.m. horsepower and torque peaks.

7:29Alex – What’s your definition of a sport truck?
Wednesday December 8, 2010 7:29
7:30Ram Nut – the MDS works on available power that can be produced with 4 cylinders, and there is a large difference in the required power to move the vehicle between 30 km/hr and 90 km/hr. If it is cycling in and out, it means you are at the edge of 4 cylinder output. – Brian
Wednesday December 8, 2010 7:30
7:30SnowChief, the HEMI torque curve is competitive across the board if you compare them. The torque plays a key role in tow capability. You only achieve that power number at the single peak point. The Vortec has a strong reputation too. I think that I’d recommend the HEMI because of the overall package. The fact that you may have a few less horsepower won’t really come into play. Gregg

7:35Steve – If your 05 truck is only equipped with OD off, then there is no way to convert the switch to have Tow/Haul and OD off as an 06MY and newer vehicle is. The transmission calibration can not be used in 05MY.

7:48Rick – the 545RFE is actually a 6 speed transmission. We are calling it that in 12MY. The six ratios are as follows: 1st – 3.0, 2nd – 1.67, 3rd – 1.5, 4th – 1.0, 5th – 0.75 and 6th – 0.67. All gears are used in ERS and under normal driving conditions under certain driver inputs. ERS display is consistent with the gear ratios shown above.

I don’t think spark plugs have been replaced..will this help? The service manual recommends spark plug replacement prior to 64K. If the vehicle is misfiring this will help with your problem
Rocco you also asked: I’m wondering on the 2008 Ram 4.7L flex fuel engine if it is safe to run an 89 or 93 tune and use this gas. Will it be harmful to the engine in any way? The 4.7l recommended fuel is 87 octane rating. This will not harm your engine but will also not provide you a benefit

8:07Mick – Make sure the transmission oil level is at the proper level. Low transmission oil level can cause the engine to stall when braking aggressivily due to the lock-up clutch coming on by having the transmission briefly losing pump prime by having the oil sloosh forward in the oil pan.

While pulling my 5,000 pound travel trailer, up 6% or higher grades, I always have to manually downshift my 2005 Power Wagon to second gear. This keeps my r.p.m.s around 4,500-5,000 to maintain 60-65 miles per hour. Is this going to cut down the engine life even though the peak h.p./torque do not come in until these engine speeds?

8:14Pasquale, good question. The E85 capable engine gets different (upgraded) valve seats and valves. The alcohol does not provide as much lubricity as gasoline. The calibration is also unique so that it looks for alcohol content in the fuel and adjusts accordingly. If you run your engine on E85 all the time, it will behave well and last as designed if you follow the recommended service , but it is harder on the engine than running gas. HEMI is not recommended for E85 application. Gregg

I regularly tow 4-7,000lb loads. Stock transmission tuning, the Ram is downright terrible even with Tow/haul mode engaged. Now, since I installed the Superchips tuner where i can alter the partial upshifts/downshifts, the Ram is effortless in towing. Regarding the 6speed…It’s really not a true 6spd as the transmission does not go through 6gears, but only 5. It’s either 2nd or 2nd-prime that gets engaged. That is ind of misleading if you say the trans is a 6spd. You should state that it’s a PT 6spd and not make it seem that it’s a fulltime 6spd.

Why does Dodge Ram have such weird ratios in their automatic transmissions? If the 545 had 10 ratios it would still be silly to have two overdrive ratios so close together. But it only has 5 ratios….so here’s a thought. Rear axle ratio stays same at 3.55, first “gear” ratio should be about 3.5, 2nd “gear” about 2.35, 3rd 1.67, 4th 1.0, and 5th about 0.7 ; with these ratios the acceleration would be much better and fuel mileage would be almost identical, and the Ram might actually win some acceleration comparison tests! The ratios in the “68” transmission are just as bad…. Is it so difficult to alter the ratios?

Thanks for the feedback. Great idea! Hopefully this transcript will be available for a while. Would also be helpful (interesting) to know what Engineers were on the chat with us. Hoping you can add that to the forum post. Thanks again.

8:3295RAM360 – the 20 mpg is the highway rating based on the EPA required drive cycle. The city MPG will be in the 13-14 range. Please refer to the Dodge.com website for more information on the fuel economy ratings. – Brian

8:32Rich – 2 prime is used for high speed kickdowns above 60 mph to get better vehicle performance on the highway. We are looking to use it on upshifts in low speed city traffic in the future but this hasn’t been decided yet.

8:32Todd – on your 2010 RAM 1500 with 5.7L; get back with your dealer and get the axle fixed for good. There may have some issues with service parts. If your dealer has a question, have them get someone from the Customer Satisfaction Team.

8:36Steve, don’t worry about using the engine. It will be fine pulling that trailer. The dyno tests that we put it through are more difficult than what you’re doing. I want to understand, though, why you need to manually downshift? If you just push to the floor, do you not get the downshift? Is it just that the trans will “hunt” between 2d and 3d gears? Gregg

8:39Pasquale, Not sure what additive you are proposing so I can’t comment on how it will address the probable wear. When the valve or valve seats wear the potential for valve burning is greatly increased. Also, the fuel map has to be spot-on or detonation/pre-ignition willd destroy the engine. Eric

8:39Eric, Thanks for the comments on a Ram based high speed desert racer. If you are in big time need, our friends at Mopar offer a Ram Runner package for our current 5.7 Light Duty. The Hemi is a great off road performer in the power wagon. In fact, the power wagon recently beat the raptor head to head in an independent comprehensive off road test!

8:40Todd, 8:08 Well, we’ve discussed the characteristic that this wasn’t there at first, but came in at 2000 miles…. you’ve stumped us. As the trans lockup clutch wears in, it should get better for shudder. Gregg
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:40
8:43Bob, we currently only offer the automatic trans in the Power Wagon. We don’t have any plans to change.

8:43Jon – you asked: “a question on oil changes… i’m suprised my 2010 1500 wants an oil change after just over 2000 miles of use, is this normaly expected ?” Your 2010 has an automatic oil change indicator system. This system monitors the truck usage and will indicate when an oil change is needed based on this usage. The system is calbrated to indicate an oil change in needed 500 miles before the expected change point to give adequate time for the service. For a 2010 vehicle, the earliest this indicator will come on is 2500 miles for a severe duty drive cycle. These intrervals were extended for the 2011 MY. Thanks Gary

8:44Dodgetomahawk, dry sump oiling systems are typically done for two reasons in racing – reduce parasitic losses and to lower the engine in the chassis. That said, the cost is significant and generally do not have extended life. I do not believe that you will see significant inroads in the general market. We try to achieve as much of the benefits of these systems as we can through managing the oil spash in the crankcase via windage trays and oil pan designs. Eric

8:46Doug – On Hemi towing capacity: RAM meets strict towing standards at the ratings published. In 2010, the truck was rated higher after extensive work optimizing the vehicle performance on key grades out west; passing Fords along the way!
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:46
8:46CajunDodge, my experience with the 3.7L 1500 is that the truck will be pretty good as a drive around, light duty application vehicle. You hit the nail on the head, the smaller engine will work harder to move the vehicle – this makes the engine operate in a more efficient range. By operating in a more efficient manner, you will get the fuel savings. BUT, as you know, the power to weight ratio is smaller, and the vehicle performance will be less remarkable. I guess I’d say, don’t be afraid of using the engine, it can handle it. The engine is designed to work hard. Keep in mind that the calibration will go into enrichment at the really high loads, so don’t keep your foot into it all the time, or you’ll see a hit in fuel economy. Gregg
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:46
8:47Ryan, great input! We are constanting trying to add value to our trucks and increase fuel economy. Our model names will continue to be 1500,2500, & 3500.
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:47
8:48Pasquale, the engine is optimised for mid grade fuel, but can run efficiently on regular fuel. Yes we could have cal’d the engine to run on premium, but most people do not want to pay the premium associated with this fuel. Eric

8:51Pasquale – No there is no method for manually turning on MDS. MDS operation is calibrated to be used as aggressively as possible for the truck. – Brian
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:51
8:51RobL, no active tuning in the exhaust. Depending upon what noise you’re hearing. If it is that loud, I wonder if you’re getting a rattle somewhere else. The exhaust system is designed to quiet the stronger / lower frequency pulses when you’re driving in MDS mode. Your exhaust doesn’t have any active features in it though. Gregg
Wednesday December 8, 2010 8:51
8:54Pasquale — The best way to maximize fuel efficiency is to observe the appropriate driving habits and ensure that your tires are properly inflated. As for 20percent improvement? That’s a challenge we’ll have to look into.
