Today’s installment of “Real People, Real Trucks” is special, not just because it’s the first edition of the blog series in 2014, but because its writer—James W. of Lusby, Maryland—does such an excellent job sharing with us the story of how pleased he is with his Ram 3500.
My GMC 1500 was starting to show signs of fatigue from the constant towing of various equipment and gear, so I started to look into 3500s. At first, I didn’t know which 3500 I wanted, and so began my “year” of window shopping and research. I looked at the GMC Sierra 3500, and the Ram 3500, too. It wasn’t until recently that the Ram 3500 really gained my attention.
A major determining factor in the purchase of my truck was my dad. He has a 1993 Ram 2500 with well over 400,000 miles (I believe), and it’s still going strong—still fires up on the first turn. That Ram truck has never let him down. And he still keeps buying other Ram trucks for commercial use.
For me to put down $45,000 on a vehicle, it has to last forever. I take the value of a dollar seriously. I test drove the GMC Sierra 3500, and was given the normal, sturdy, firm ride that I’m used to. Loving the Ram truck’s style and blended fender over the dual rear wheels, I stopped by, looked at one and decided to test drive it. Approaching the vehicle with a prejudice, I hopped in, took it on a drive and fell in love.
The ride of the truck is simply amazing. It handles like a car—like a bigger version of my wife’s 2008 Chrysler 300 Touring. Normally, it takes me months to assess whether or not I will keep a vehicle. But this one is a pretty easy decision. I’ll be keeping this vehicle indefinitely.
When it comes to towing, this truck more than exceeds my requirements, but purchasing a bigger truck now will allow me to expand my towing ability without having constantly to keep changing vehicles. The integrated trailer brake controller makes the towing operation a breeze. I could go on for days about the things I love about this truck, but I would end up running out of character space. Once the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available, I may just go and let the wife keep my other car.
