TorqueFlite 8 Aluminum Retainer and Vane Pump – Next Items Up for Bid

Among all the countless parts that come together to form the new 2013 Ram 1500, there are a select few that help make this our most fuel-efficient truck to date. Two of those—the aluminum gear retainer and vane pump, both components of the TorqueFlite 8 Transmission—combine to become our next item up for bid in the Engineering A Giant auction for charity. Here’s more information on each of these important parts, courtesy of the Ram engineers.

  • Vane Pump: Unlike more traditional, less efficient, larger-than-necessary pumps, the compact design of this off-centerline, chain-driven vane pump allows it to be optimally sized for the proper flow of oil to the TorqueFlite 8 Transmission. This makes it one of the major contributors to the new 2013 Ram 1500’s efficient fuel economy.
  • Aluminum Retainer: The efficient architecture of the TorqueFlite 8 Transmission is enabled by parts such as this aluminum gear retainer. Transmission architecture dictates the need for a very long part rotating at high speeds. This drove a new high-tech aluminum casting process, which in turn allowed for very thin durable walls, keeping the rotating mass low and allowing for smooth operation in all conditions.
