With the successful launch of the new 2013 SRT Viper at the New York Auto Show this past week, it’s fun to recall a few years back when its sibling, the Dodge RAM SRT-10 pickup, stole a little of the Viper’s thunder.
Like the SRT Viper, the SRT-10 pickup was developed by the engineering team at Chrysler that is today called SRT – Street and Racing Technology, then known as Performance Vehicle Operations. The SRT-10 used the same 8.3L, 500hp V10 that powered the Viper, along with some other special pieces, creating one serious hot rod truck.
At the Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea, Michigan, NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan (above) used a 2004 SRT-10 to set a Guinness World Record for world’s fastest production pickup. His two-way average on the five-mile oval test track was 154.587 mph.
The original SRT-10 pickup was introduced in 2004 and, sadly in the eyes of many enthusiasts, discontinued in 2006. How about it, RAM fans? Should RAM Trucks return with a new, updated version of the world’s fastest pickup?
